My name is Grace Macedo. I was born and raised in Chicago and grew up in Little Village. I moved to the Southside for high school and now I live in Pilsen. I’ve worked in homecare for eight years, and I have two children who are 10 and 14 years old.
When Bruce Rauner cut child care, things got really chaotic for me. What Rauner did was limit how much someone could earn and still qualify for the Child Care Assistance Program. I was a single mom making close to minimum wage and with Bruce Rauner’s cuts, I still made too much money to qualify. My family and I tried just cutting back on household expenses, but that wasn’t enough. We had to pay more in child care than I made working at my job every week and it got to the point where I couldn’t afford to work anymore. The people at Gads Hill helped me get a scholarship for my children so I could keep my job and my children could have quality child care. Without their help, I would have had to quit my job.
I’m with JB because he is for the people. I have friends who are social workers, and I know Bruce Rauner is trying to cut the services they provide. He has tried to cut homecare, and I see every day how important that is to people who want to live independently in their homes. If Bruce Rauner were elected again, programs that help families like mine would have to be closed down. JB will fix things. Instead of cutting programs, JB will fight for families like mine to get the help we need.
