I’m a proud union laborer. I’m sort of third generation. My father-in-law was a union laborer and so was his dad. So after I graduated Olympia High School and Quincy University I joined our LIUNA local, I got my training, and I became a construction laborer.
On July 1st, 2017 I was told I was out of work. I was working in Bloomington on a state roadwork job, but with the budget impasse we got shut down. July is our busy season. I’m not used to not working in July. If I’m sitting at home and don’t have stable work, I’m not making the income we rely on and we have to change our lifestyle. Rauner is also a Right to Work guy. Right to work is a good slogan but it doesn’t mean what people think it means. Sure, we should all have the right to work, but we should also have the right to work for a fair wage.
Workers should be treated fairly and we should be paid a fair wage for our work. I’m out there working hard in 100-degree heat and I want to be paid fairly for that work. We support JB because he recognizes that. He’s pro-worker. JB opposes Right to Worker and will fight for fair wages. He’s been to our union hall multiple times talking about his plans for the state and listening to us. JB is with us so we are with him.
