I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. I went to Morgan Park high school and received my bachelor's degree in communications from Governors State University and then my master’s degree from Chicago State University. I’m currently pursuing my doctorate at CSU.
I got a job at CSU in 2012 working with student affairs—that’s my passion. In 2015 when Bruce Rauner took over I went to an African American history event at the Governor’s Mansion and I asked him personally if he would support CSU. He told me he would see what he could do. But he didn’t. He wouldn’t approve a budget for over 2 years and as a result, there were lay-offs at CSU. I was one of the first of the 300 people who got let go. My life was flipped upside down. I went from having a stable career and living situation and a future to barely making ends meet, working odd jobs, and relying on my friends and family for support.
I’m with JB because of his lifelong support for education. He doesn’t just talk about it—he puts resources into the education system. Unlike Bruce Rauner, JB will make sure we’re getting all the opportunities to underserved populations by funding scholarships and getting students what they need to succeed. I’m 100% with JB.
