My name is Grace Macedo. I was born and raised in Chicago and grew up in Little Village. I moved to the Southside during high school and now I live in Pilsen. I’ve worked in homecare for eight years, and I have two children.
When Bruce Rauner cut child care, things got really chaotic for me. Rauner limited how much someone could earn and still qualify for the Child Care Assistance Program. I was a single mom making close to minimum wage and with Bruce Rauner’s cuts, I still made too much money to qualify. My family and I tried just cutting back on household expenses, but that wasn’t enough. We had to pay more in child care than I made working at my job every week and it got to the point where I couldn’t afford to work anymore. Fortunately, a child care center helped me get a scholarship for my children so I could keep my job and my children could have quality child care. Without their help, I would have had to quit my job.
I’m with JB because he is for the people. I have friends who are social workers, and I know Bruce Rauner is trying to cut the services they provide. He has tried to cut homecare, and I see every day how important that is to people who want to live independently in their homes. If Bruce Rauner were elected again, more programs that help families like mine would shut down. JB will fix things. Instead of cutting programs, JB will fight for families like mine to get the help we need.
