I’m a state senator for Illinois’ 40th Senate district and a staunch advocate for reproductive justice. I work to give women the ability to fully navigate the economic stream that bolsters families in every community across our state, but for the last four years Illinois has had a governor intent on standing in my way.
In 2014, Bruce Rauner came into office promising to be pro-choice and on the side of women’s rights. The then-candidate said he had “no social agenda” and promised Illinois women he wasn’t like other Republicans who led attacks on their access to healthcare, social services, and their fundamental rights. Unfortunately, Bruce Rauner has time and again shown us that was a sham. His 736-day budget crisis has had devastating effects on Illinois women who rely on critical services. And when it comes to women’s healthcare, Rauner has threatened our basic right to even access critical procedures. He crowned himself the “strongest supporter” of anti-choice candidates, and only signed HB40 after intense pressure from myself and other brave advocates.
I believe we need a governor who will not just pay lip service to gender equality, but a governor who leads with the belief that one of the single best things we can do to bolster our economy is raise the standard of living for fully half the population. That’s why I’m supporting JB Pritzker this November. JB won’t pander to both sides of these issues, or promise one thing and do another. JB will be a steadfast ally, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting him.
